International Conference “Social Entrepreneurship: A tool for addressing local development, youth unemployment and social needs"

An international conference on Social Entrepreneurship was organized by the Ministry of Labour, Social Security and Welfare on 10 and 11 June 2014 in Heraklion, Crete, co-financed by DG Enterprise and Industry of the European Commission.

The conference was held under the Greek Presidency of the EU Council, in order to contribute to the awareness of the public on the social value of social entrepreneurship, particularly for socially vulnerable groups and young people, to the activation of all public and private bodies involved in the development of social entrepreneurship, as well as to providing information on the various financial tools that can be used by social entrepreneurs.

48 speakers from Greece and EU countries discussed the potential development of the social economy in both the Greek and the European level and reported on current developments, successful practices and recent legislative initiatives in the Member States, being attended to by more than 350 participants.

Aiming especially to promote the institution of awarding the best business plans for social enterprises, a competition was organized in the context of the conference, involving students from the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, Athens University of Economics and Business, University of Crete, and Technological Educational Institute of Crete.
